If you've ever purchased body butter and wondered why it didn't look ''whipped'', that's b/c it solidified, and no emulsifier was used. I believe this option is better for those with eczema and chronic dry skin. While the bulk of my products are organic in nature, I am not opposed to commonly used preservatives or emulsifiers-- it's just not my personal preference. I don't have any moral obligations against using either. If I have a customer that would like their whipped BB to remain light and fluffy, I can definitely incorporate an emulsifier. Personally, my preference is non-emulsified. I should say that my SKIN prefers Body Butter in the organic form! My skin feels well moisturized and for longer without the added non natural ingredients. Let's dive into the differences, shall we?
Whipped Body Butter
Ingredients:
Typically made with butters (like shea butter, cocoa butter) and oils (like coconut oil, jojoba oil) without water.
Does not contain emulsifiers since there's no water phase.
Texture:
Light, fluffy, and airy texture achieved by whipping the butters and oils together.
Melts on contact with skin, providing a rich, oily feel.
Application:
Heavier and more occlusive, ideal for very dry skin.
May feel greasy and take longer to absorb into the skin.
Shelf Life:
Longer shelf life because there’s no water, which reduces the risk of microbial growth.
Still, adding antioxidants like vitamin E can help extend the shelf life.
Emulsified Body Butter
Ingredients:
Contains a mixture of oils, butters, water, and emulsifying agents (like emulsifying wax, stearic acid) to combine the oil and water phases.
Often includes preservatives to prevent microbial growth due to the water content.
Texture:
Creamier and thicker than regular lotions but lighter than whipped body butter.
Smooth and more lotion-like consistency, usually less greasy.
Application:
Absorbs more quickly into the skin, providing hydration without the greasy feel.
Suitable for daily use and for those who prefer a lighter moisturizing effect.
Shelf Life:
Shorter shelf life compared to whipped body butter due to the water content.
Requires preservatives to ensure safety and longevity.
Summary
Whipped Body Butter is water-free, with a rich, oily feel and a longer shelf life but can be greasy and slow to absorb.
Emulsified Body Butter contains water and emulsifiers, offering a lighter, creamier texture that absorbs more quickly but requires preservatives and has a shorter shelf life.
The choice between the two depends on personal preference, skin type, and desired application experience.
